Real men wear heels.
Men of Davao City affirmed their masculinity by traversing Roxas Avenue to People’s Park while wearing high-heeled sandals and shoes to support the advocacies concerning women, Monday.
Dubbed as “In Her Shoes 3” with the theme “Fighting Sexual Harassment and Violence Against Women”, National Youth Commission (NYC) Davao Area Coordinator Julius Gutierrez said the nationwide activity aims to establish awareness about the real situation and experiences of women who are victims of physical and sexual abuse, discrimination and rampant cases of human trafficking.
Gutierrez also encouraged the public to help the government in promoting the advocacies and activities that protect women.
NYC Presidential Officer Fernando Quiazon said the commission allots budget for the advocacy activities in line with the Women’s Month every March.
He said that they also ensure that government sectors such as the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) and the Department of Labor and Employment as well as the Local Government Units (LGU) to include in their budgets advocacy programs for women.
“Ang commitment ng NYC, binabudgetan ang mga advocacy ng Women’s Month yearly. Ini-ensure namin na matugunan yan. Ini-ensure din namin na sana sa mga respective budgets ng mga program partners natin sa government at LGU, maadvocate nila ang yearly implementation ng Women’s Month,” he said.
He said that the activity not only promotes respect for women and their hardships and struggles and but also for the women to acknowledge the efforts of men.
“Nanawagan ako sa mga kalalakihan na sana igalang natin ang mga kababaihan, yung respeto kung paano naghirap ang ating mga nanay. Sana manatili yung respeto natin sa mga kababaihan at yung mga babae din para sa mga kalalakihan. Equality of rights,” he said.
The activity was led by the NYC along with the members of different government agencies such as the DSWD, the City Social Services and Development Office, the Department of Justice (DOJ), the Philippine National Police (PNP), the Philippine Army, and some youth and men organizations.
In Mindanao, the activity was simultaneously done in Cagayan de Oro, Zamboanga City, and General Santos City.
