Davao City is considered to be the Center of Excellence for Information Technology-Business Process Outsourcing (ICT-BPO) Operations this year.
The award was given by the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) ICT Office along with the private organization, Information Technology-Business Process Management Association of the Philippines (IT-BPMAP).
ICT Davao President Samuel Matunog said Davao City had been leading the Top 10 Next Waves Cities (NWC) for years already, thus the recognition.
“For several years now, Davao City ranked as number one in their NWC rankings. Because of this, they awarded us with the Center of Excellence award for the ICT-BPO operation and we are recognized nationally,” said Matunog.
The survey for the Top 10 Next Wave Cities is conducted by the DOST and IT-BPMAP every year.
With this, Matunog believed that the city will attract more investors in the ICT-BPO industry.
Aside from Davao City, the cities of Cebu, Metro Clark, Metro Bacolod and Iloilo were acknowledged as Center of Excellence awardees.
Matunog added that there are about 33,000 online workers, mostly those who are working for an average of eight hours, either corporate or home-based which was one of the reasons for the award.
“We hope to double this (online workers) in the next three years or less. And we are now talking with top universities in the city so we can get their commitment to support it,” he said.
Matunog said the University of Mindanao has already expressed their support.
Meanwhile, the SM City Mall offered to build new facilities to cater the next 30,000 online workers.
